I had heard about Highland Bakery several times before I actually had the chance to visit it myself. When I finally arrived, I couldn’t believe it had taken me so long to go. Tucked away just off Freedom Parkway in the Old Forth Ward section of Atlanta, Highland Bakery is one Atlanta destination you don’t want to miss.
When you step in the door the first thing you notice is a pastry case with cup cakes, cookies, biscuits and other pastries that fill you with delight and desire. The opposite wall is filled with freshly baked bread such as sourdough and whole wheat ready to be taken home and eaten in a delicious sandwich. You can stop there if you like, taking home a sweet potato biscuit or delicious chocolate mousse peanut butter cupcake, but if you have more time, sitting down to have breakfast or lunch in their restaurant is a fantastic experience.
With a menu that serves breakfast and lunch from open to close, there is something for everyone. (Mon-Fri 7 am – 4 pm / Sat-Sun 8 am – 4 pm) With build your own omelets, sweet potato pancakes, or even a tofu scramble, it’s hard to go wrong with the breakfast menu. I tried the french toast. It comes with four large slices of challah bread, fresh fruit, and a delicious syrup. I also tried a friend’s grits and was happy to find how amazingly delicious they were. Next time, grits will definitely be a part of my meal.
If you’re looking for something else, Highland Bakery also has an extensive lunch menu. With salads, soup, sandwiches and more, there is something for everyone.
For dessert, I took home a sweet potato biscuit and a double chocolate cookie. Both were so mouth-wateringly good, I wanted to go back right away for more! The biscuit tastes more like dessert, like sweet potato pie. The cookie had the hard outer crust like a cookie, but a soft inside like a brownie. If those two pastries can be so heavenly, I can only imagine how good everything else must taste as well.
So the next time you’re in search of a delicious breakfast, a yummy pastry, or just somewhere fun and unique to eat, check out the Highland Bakery. (They also have a second location in Midtown.)

Lil W. was born and raised in the ATL and loves finding new things to do in the city: especially as it relates to good food and fandom (usually separately, sometimes together). Currently she’s working as a server and hopes one day to have her own food establishment. For now, however, she enjoys trying new places (especially indie coffee shops), attending Cons, and reading a good book.
